Growth-rate checks: losses, units and percentage points

Correct misleading comparisons involving losses, zero or tiny bases, percentage points, units and currency effects.

What you will check
  • Keep amounts and direction alongside negative, zero or small bases.
  • Separate percentage points, relative changes, scales and currency effects.
  • Retain evidence that periods, accounts and scopes are comparable.

A large result from a calculator does not validate the comparison. Copy the account, period, consolidation scope, currency, scale, and reported or adjusted basis from the source first. This exercise turns that input record into an error-correction sheet and a short conclusion. Every amount below is fictional and describes no actual company.

1. Start with amounts and direction when profit is negative or zero

Fictional profit comparisons · matching periods, millions of one currency
Previous → currentAmount changeMisleading wordingClearer wording
−18 → −6+12Growth of −66.7% means deteriorationLoss narrows from 18 to 6, an improvement of 12; still a loss
30 → −6−36Give only a negative growth rateProfit of 30 turns to a loss of 6; period change is −120%
0 → 7+7Zero growth or infinite growthProfit rises from zero to 7; this percentage formula is undefined
1 → 5+4Emphasise only 400% growthAn increase of 4, from 1 to 5, or 400%; retain the small base

A negative denominator in the conventional calculation from −18 to −6 can reverse the apparent message. Do not silently replace it with an absolute denominator and label the result ordinary growth. If measuring the change in loss magnitude, state that definition. With a positive starting value of 30 and an ending loss of 6, the one-period change (−6 − 30) / 30 = −120% can be calculated, but it is not a positive compounding path.

The growth calculator leaves rates unavailable when the starting value is nonpositive and does not supply a CAGR when the ending value is nonpositive. Do not replace those blanks with zeros. Filings may also flag comparisons as not meaningful. In the actual Sealed Air filing, locate “percentage change is not meaningful” and inspect the amounts and signs in the corresponding rows.

2. Separate percentage points from relative percentage changes

Fictional operating-margin check · millions of one currency
MeasurePrevious periodCurrent period
Revenue375420
Operating income3046.2
Operating margin8%11%

The margins are 30 / 375 × 100 = 8% and 46.2 / 420 × 100 = 11%. The difference is +3 percentage points. The relative change in the margin itself is (11 − 8) / 8 = +37.5%. “Margin rose 3%” leaves those meanings confused. Verify each period in the margin calculator, then record their difference in percentage points separately.

The table establishes a changed proportion. It does not establish cost savings, price increases or a changed business mix as the cause. Use expense details and management discussion to investigate rather than attaching a cause to the arithmetic.

3. Align the scale before dividing two amounts

Suppose the prior figure is 4,800 million won and the current figure is 5,280,000,000 won. Dividing the displayed numbers introduces a million-fold scale mismatch even though the currency is the same. Convert the current amount to 5,280 million won first. Growth is then (5,280 − 4,800) / 4,800 = 10%.

Normalise the comparison inputs first
RowOriginal value and scaleValue and scale used in comparison
Previous4,800 million won4,800 million won
Current5,280,000,000 won5,280 million won

The scale may be printed in a column heading or above the table. Quantities, share counts and per-share amounts can use different scales within the same table. Keep the original and converted values so that transcription errors can be traced.

4. Distinguish the business amount from a translation effect

This is a fictional currency sensitivity exercise. Dollar revenue stays at 50 million in both periods while the comparison exchange rate changes from 1,100 to 1,210 won per dollar. These are neither actual market rates nor a substitute for an issuer’s accounting translation procedure.

Hypothetical currency translation · not actual exchange rates
BasisPreviousCurrentChange
Dollar revenue50 million dollars50 million dollars0%
Assumed rate1,100 won/dollar1,210 won/dollar+10%
Assumed translated revenue55,000 million won60,500 million won+10%

The translated amount rises even though dollar revenue is unchanged. At a real business, subtracting a single exchange-rate movement from revenue growth does not automatically produce operating growth. For constant-currency or organic measures, identify exactly which currency or acquisition effects were removed and find the reconciliation to reported revenue. The currency-translation discussion in the same actual filing is a place to practise locating that explanation.

5. Resolve a scope mismatch before calculating

Current consolidated revenue divided by prior separate revenue is not a like-for-like comparison. Nor is current adjusted operating income compared with prior reported operating income. If the latest comparative value differs from your old note, document the changed account, scope and amendment explanation, then align the periods again. A percentage cannot resolve an unexplained difference.

  1. Open the Microsoft company page and record the annual period and source link. Do not interpret its annual data as quarterly figures.
  2. Find management’s bridge between reported revenue and currency or acquisition adjustments. Record each adjustment’s definition and period.
  3. Use the amendments and adjustments guide to preserve both versions. For cross-market comparisons, begin with the currency and scope checks.

6. Finish one checked comparison sentence

Template: “For [account and scope] over [matching periods], the amount moved from [previous value and unit] to [current value and unit], a change of [amount]. The base is [positive, zero or negative], so I record [rate or reason not to calculate it]. The ratio changed by [percentage points]. I included [verified source adjustments]; [unverified explanation] remains open.”

For the margin example: “Comparable operating margin rose from 8% to 11%, an increase of 3 percentage points. Its relative increase was 37.5%. The cause has not yet been established.” A large percentage alone does not establish durable business improvement or investment value.
